Another excellent post. Your infant massage mommy memory triggered a memory of my own- infant swimming "mommy and me" classes. There was NO WAY my kiddo wanted his head submerged under the water (to the tune of "Ring Around the Rosies") but I also remember him arching his back in protest at the back float, and absolutely hating going under the fun "water sprinkler" obstacle course that they had us walk them through. I quickly learned how to make accommodations for my kiddo, long before I knew anything about sensory differences or autism. We see our child is in pain and we do what comes naturally. Thanks again for letting me know I'm not alone! :) Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227616579829607218.post-91257092523613085672016-06-14T22:28:49.966-07:002016-06-14T22:28:49.966-07:00Hope all the early mum selves get a hug in a way t...Hope all the early mum selves get a hug in a way that feels helpful.

Jean Mercer [infant developmentalist] published her own list of early signs. If he or she does, the possibility of a later diagnosis of autism is remote. If the child does not do most of the things mentioned, there may still be reasons other than autism for the problem, but it would be a good idea to see a specialist who can make sense of what is going on. Whatever the trouble may be, it may be time to seek treatment and help to move the child along developmentally as much as possible.

That was EIGHTEEN months, remember! And the acceptance part is so important! We live in a world where neurodiversity is only now becoming understood and valued, there's much work to be done.Tania Kachttp://www.mywholeheartedden.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227616579829607218.post-61364070323368225452016-06-14T13:17:55.296-07:002016-06-14T13:17:55.296-07:00She's back!!! I was so bogged down on blame early on (I "caused" the SPD for riding a riding mower while pregnant; my son was never going to be "normal" because of his SPD; etc.). But, as always, you've captured the heart of it - it's about acceptance, not fault.
-mf
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227616579829607218.post-27680569301672183882016-06-14T05:25:35.667-07:002016-06-14T05:25:35.667-07:00Wish we could hug our early mom selves!
